Writer’s Block welcomes submissions from established and new writers. Before submitting an article
or query to WB, visit the WB Archives and read the information below to develop a sense of our requirements and preferences.
General
In general, WB does not publish articles about writing markets or how to get published. We usually do not consider previously published
material and we never publish material that can be considered one of the following:
- Hate literature;
- Overtly religious;
- Offensive on the basis of sex, gender, or religion; and
- Advertising.
Features
Articles selected for our Feature section must address the issue’s theme and provide a unique and engaging perspective on the topic at hand. The
article should be informative, reflecting careful research of appropriate resources, and also be entertaining. Features should be written in the third
person and should include descriptive subheadings. Sidebars may be included, where appropriate.
Essays
Articles selected for our Essay section include editorials, testimonials, and humour pieces. Essays should relate to the issue’s theme or topic and
should be original, engaging, and reflect a unique point of view. Essays can be written in the first person and should not include subheadings.
Interviews
Articles selected for our Interview section include discussions with interesting Canadians in the writing trade. Interviews should present answers to
unique questions and uncover new information of interest to our target audience.
Book Reviews
WB reviews non-fiction books on topics of interest to Canadians in the writing trade. Book reviews can be written in the first person. If you
would like to be considered for review assignments, please contact Dalya Goldberger, Managing Editor, at dgoldberger@niva.com.
Figments
Fiction and poetry selected for our Figments section should explore original subject matter and display a unique perspective or voice, as well as a
keen attention to language, form, and style. Flash fiction submissions are welcome.
Letters
Letters to the editor and reader feedback may be published in the Letters section without notice to the author.
Payment
At this time, no payment is made in exchange for publication; however, a byline and short, but descriptive bio are attributed to each article.
Bios
Please include a short bio (maximum 25 words) with your submission. The bio may include a link to a web site or e-mail address, if appropriate.
Acknowledgement and Notification
WB acknowledges all submissions via e-mail that comply with the Submission Format. If your piece is selected for
publication, we will notify you of our intent to publish your work within two weeks of publication.
WB does not update authors on the status of their submissions; however, queries about an article’s status are welcome.
Rights
WB acquires one-time rights on accepted pieces. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, as long as we are notified. We generally do not consider
previously published material.
Linking and Republishing
Links to WB from other web sites are permitted; however, such permission does not constitute our endorsement of that site.
WB articles may not be republished without the express permission of the author. Such permission may be sought by contacting the Managing
