As professional writers and editors, we don’t often think of those in our society who have difficulty reading. As our feature story explores, however, illiteracy is pervasive even in Canadian society, where a large number of people are well educated. Illiteracy is an important issue for writers—after all, we need an audience to consume the products of our work, and to provide feedback that helps us to learn and grow in our chosen field. Fighting illiteracy is important; our livelihoods depend on it.
