"Whether" Vs. "If"

The word "if" is often mistakenly used as a substitute for the word "whether". Use the following rules to guide your word choice:

Use "if" to express a condition.
     You may borrow my car if you are careful with it.

Use "whether" to express alternatives.
     She did not know whether to say yes or no.
