The holiday season is a time for people to get
together for laughter, food, and fun. Many of us gather for family
reunions, while some may use the opportunity to meet others with
whom they share a common interest.
For writers, there are few places better to exchange thoughts and
ideas about issues related to the art of writing than by joining a
writing organization, or by participating in a workshop. Such
exchanges provide aspiring, as well as established, writers with
many benefits. In Peer to peer: Creative writing workshops,
John Collins shares his insight into workshops in which he has
participated. He also discusses the pros and cons of organized
workshops versus less formal gatherings.
Such associations provide writers with the opportunity to discuss
and critique each other's creative writing projects. As John writes,
membership in a workshop need not be expensive or rigidly
structured. All that is required is a small group of like-minded and
like-skilled writers who have a desire to share their knowledge and
creativity while learning from others.
Another vehicle for the exchange of useful information among
writers is this publication. Writer's Block fills the void
left by other publications aimed at writers in that we provide
information that is of value to all professionals who are either
currently employed, or who are seeking employment, in the rapidly
growing field of communications. We believe that writing is not only
a creative pursuit, but if one hopes to earn a living from writing,
it must also be combined with prudent business practices.
Enjoy the spirit of the season while giving, receiving, and
always learning.
